To start, here are a couple of comparison studies - knitted and crocheted hats in the same yarn.

This is the first hat that I knit following Elizabeth Zimmerman's instructions on a video from the library from her PBS series. I highly recommend the video and I had so much fun! I love a challenge! Here is a close up of the fair isle design. Double click on the image to get the full effect.

Here are two hats made from the same Japanese Noro wool. It is one of my favourite wools to work with. I just love the colours! The first is knitted and the second is crocheted. The knitted hat is much stretchier and the crocheted hat is thicker and holds its shape.
This wee hat is %100 wool and fits about 40 cm (16"). But it is stretchy so it could fit a bit smaller and a bit bigger. This was my knitting project in Mexico and I was pleased to see that I was not the only one who brought my knitting to the beach...

Okay, although I have grossly neglected this site, it doesn't mean that I haven't been making and selling hats. It is time to do some updating. I wish I could better capture the detail on this, my newest favourite hat! I crocheted it this summer with the softest merino wool I have ever worked with (Mission Falls). I was inspired by Debbie Stoller's book, "Happy Hooker" which made a scarf out of these flowers.... I made them into a hat! The background is a dark plum purple and the flowers are in a red, brown, purple and green - not quite as bright as the flash makes it look! You can find more about mission falls wool here. The colours on this hat are their poppy, nectar, damson and pistachio... and I have a bunch more of their colours for another hat, too! But now the details...

Yarn Dreaming

I am doing some serious yarn dreaming. My sister gave me this yarn for Christmas. It is hand spun and dyed from Wales and its beautiful. It has to be to make something for myself..... but what!

I have been perusing the book "One Skein Wonders, 101 Yarn Store Favourites" and it has so many great ideas! Decisions, decisions!






And this I ordered online. It is organic wool - 2 skeins of black, one each of blue, purple and oatmeal. It is such beautiful wool... what should I make out of it?!

What I have been doing instead of making hats...

I have been busy and it has mostly been needle arts. And I do have a couple of almost finished hats hanging around that will be finished shortly (right after I finish Nancy's). Christmas brought a list of things that I would like to make for gifts. Of course, my imagination is always more ambitious than I actually have time for but I did get a lot done.

I made this duvet and duvet cover for my daughter, Erin. You can read about it here



I also made 3 pairs of these. They are a felted slipper which means that you make them huge and then purposely shrink them to come up with a thick, felted fabric. These are actually the last pair I made for a friend who is a Philly fan. They will match previous year's gifts of a orange, white and black toque and mitts. Next year it will have to be a scarf...

Here they are shrunken - hopefully to a ladies size 9...













And here are the first pair I made on the happy feet of the owner. Dean had been complaining about not having slippers for months before.

The second pair went to my sister for Christmas. They were black with red trim on the opening. I had a lot of fun learning how to make them. However, knitting just takes me so much longer. I could have made 3 hats in the time it took me to make one slipper....

Comparisons

EDITED: to add the 'buy now' buttons have been removed and these hats have been moved to the post dated December 31, 2008

(make sure you check the previous post for the 3 new hats I added today.) So with my newly improved knitting skills, I decided to do a little experiment. Using the same yarn (Noro, my current favourite - this is from the Kureyon line), I crocheted a wee cap and then knitted one. Although the knitting takes me about 5 times as long, it uses considerably less wool. The crocheted cap is much thicker and the fabric is more stiff. The knitted one is stretchier. They are both for small heads. Although I still love the creative possibilities of crochet, I am enjoying the challenge of knitting. This knitting pattern follows the Elizabeth Zimmermann pattern very closely (with out the nordic pattern). But isn't this yarn great? I love the colours! To me the crochet has the effect of making them even more vibrant - more concentrated.

This crocheted hat is obviously also 100% wool. It has a small ruffled brim. It fits about 45cm (18"). Here is a view from the top so you get an appreciation for the effect of the way the yarn is dyed.

This is a crocheted hat out of the same yarn as the knitted hat further down this page. (Paton's Shetland Chunky). Someone ordered some hats out of these colours last year and I have been having fun playing with the colours ever since. This one has a picot edge.
